Bon Odori originated as a dance performed from July 13th to 16th during the Obon festival to welcome and send off the spirits of the ancestors and offer them memorial services. Starting in the late Muromachi period, it developed into a dedicated dance performed to the accompaniment of traditional music and folk songs. By the early Edo period, it had become widely established in its current form, incorporating aspects of popular entertainment.
